, virgina. key swing state. you were on cnn "starting point" the morning of the election, just yesterday morning. you were asked by soledad what signs you would be looking for of a romney win in virginia. >> i would look for the beltway counties around washed, loudon, fairfax, prince william. if governor romney were to win fairfax, prince william county and hold his own and stay close in fairfax, to me that would be a great signal that he's going to win the state. >> as i mentioned, i was reporting in those counties last night, prince william county which went for obama essentially the same percentage it did in 2008, winning all those counties you mentioned. what would you say are the big lessons you learned from your state about this loss for romney last night? >> there was a piece of good news. we won eight out of the 11 congressional races, kate, in virginia. at the more local level, republicans did very well. we've got more work to do in the northern virginia beltway. i was fortunate to do well there in 2009. those are the greatest number of independent voters who will vote the issue

the economy. probably ain't gonna happen. but still cnn contributors will cain and roland martin are going to address that. they join me now. welcome, gentlemen. >> that was a funny skit. >> wasn't it funny? >> that was funny. >> i have this great idea, roland. why doesn't president obama appoint mitt romney as his secretary of business? >> right. >> seriously. right. that's really going to happen. first of all, we have a secretary of business. it's called the commerce secretary. normally that's the person who handles that sort of stuff. bottom line is people keep talking about what president barack obama needs to do. the fundamental problem with getting something done in washed is not with president obama. it's whether speaker john boehner can keep his republican caucus under control. tea party members last time, most of them freshmen, scuttled a lot of things that could have been done. that's the real issue. i do believe the president and speaker boehner can have a good relationship, certainly much better than senator mcconnell. can speaker boehner get his own troops in line? that's the

with a lack at some of the other stories making news today. good morning. >> good morning, soledad. cnn is projecting that ann kirkpatrick will return to congress. she barely beat republican challenger, jonathan payton. yet several house races are still up for grabs across the country this morning. in palm springs, california, republican mary bono mack, she's not giving up. she trailed democrat raul luis with all precincts reporting, but she says a large number of ballots have yet to be reported. mack's husband, connie mack, lost his bid in florida to bill nelson. in another tight race, alan west is not conceding defeat. he's demanding a partial recount in his re-election bid against democratic challenger patrick murphy. right now murphy has a very slim lead of less than 2,100 votes, but that's slightly more than what's needed to trigger an automatic recount. >>> the man behind that anti-muslim movie that caused so much rage overseas has been sentenced to a year in federal prison. mark youssif admit head used an alias without permission. he allegedly made a different name when he made t
